HealthCare.gov vs. Using a Health Insurance Agent: What’s the Difference?

HealthQuoted EditorialPublished Aug 26, 20262 min read

HealthCare.gov is the federal Marketplace website that determines eligibility and displays available Marketplace plans. A licensed and Marketplace-registered agent can help explain options and assist with the application, but the consumer should review and authorize the information and plan selection.

Educational information. Check current rules and the exact plan before making a coverage decision.

What HealthCare.gov does

HealthCare.gov is the official federal Marketplace for Florida. It accepts applications, determines Marketplace eligibility, calculates available savings under current rules, and supports plan enrollment.

Consumers can use it directly without an agent. HealthQuoted is an independent insurance website and is not HealthCare.gov, CMS, or a government agency.

What a licensed agent can do

An agent can help organize household information, explain insurance terminology, compare represented plans, assist with the application, and help with certain post-enrollment questions. An agent cannot change eligibility rules or guarantee a subsidy.

Agents may not represent every insurer. Ask which companies and products the agent can discuss and whether another option should be reviewed directly.

Privacy and consumer control

Whether applying directly or with help, use secure systems and understand what information is being collected. Review all application answers, confirm the projected household income, and approve the exact plan before submission.

Never share a Marketplace password or security code in response to an unexpected request. Ask how agent permission is documented, how long it lasts, and how to revoke it.

Which approach should you use?

A consumer comfortable comparing plan documents and completing the application may prefer to use HealthCare.gov directly. Someone who wants help comparing networks, prescriptions, cost sharing, or application steps may value licensed assistance.

The decision does not itself determine the premium tax credit. Savings are based on the official application.

Common questions

Will I lose Marketplace savings if I use an agent?

No. Eligible consumers can receive Marketplace savings when a properly registered agent helps enroll them through the Marketplace.

Is HealthQuoted a government website?

No. HealthQuoted is an independent insurance website operated by a licensed insurance agent.
