Check the ACA Marketplace
During Open Enrollment, eligible consumers can apply for Marketplace plans. Outside that period, losing qualifying coverage or another qualifying life event may create a Special Enrollment Period. Voluntarily dropping coverage does not always qualify.
A Marketplace application can also screen for potential Medicaid or CHIP eligibility. Use the official eligibility result rather than assuming that income alone determines the outcome.

Investigate Florida Medicaid and Florida KidCare
Florida Medicaid eligibility is administered through official state agencies and differs by eligibility group. Children may have options through Florida KidCare even when adults in the household use different coverage.
Do not rely on an outdated income chart. Household circumstances and program rules should be checked on the official Florida sites.

Review job-based coverage and COBRA
A current employer may offer coverage, and a spouse or parent's plan may be available in some situations. COBRA can allow temporary continuation of certain employer coverage after a qualifying event, but the consumer may be responsible for more of the premium.
Compare the full cost, network, and timing before waiving or ending job-based coverage. Access to an affordable employer offer can affect Marketplace savings eligibility.
Be cautious with products that are not comprehensive ACA coverage
Short-term, fixed-indemnity, discount, or limited-benefit products are not automatically equivalent to comprehensive ACA Marketplace insurance. Ask for written information about exclusions, pre-existing conditions, benefit limits, prescription coverage, and whether the product is major medical insurance.
If you need immediate medical attention, coverage shopping should not delay urgent or emergency care. Community health centers and local assistance programs may also help with access to care while coverage is being resolved.
Common questions
Can I get health insurance without a job?
Yes. Marketplace eligibility is not limited to employed people. Savings depend on the official application, and other programs may also be relevant.
Can I enroll immediately after losing coverage?
Loss of qualifying coverage may create a Special Enrollment Period, subject to timing and documentation rules. Confirm promptly through HealthCare.gov.
