Annual Marketplace Open Enrollment

Open Enrollment is the annual period when consumers can enroll in or change Marketplace plans without needing a qualifying life event. Enrolling earlier in the window may be necessary for coverage to start on January 1.

Employer plans, Medicare, Medicaid, and Florida KidCare use different enrollment or eligibility rules. This article addresses individual ACA Marketplace coverage.

Special Enrollment Periods outside the annual window

A Special Enrollment Period may be available after certain household or coverage changes. Common examples include loss of qualifying coverage, marriage, birth or adoption, and some permanent moves. Each event has conditions, deadlines, and possible document requirements.

Loss of Medicaid or CHIP can be relevant to a Marketplace Special Enrollment Period. Start the investigation as soon as a termination notice arrives rather than waiting for coverage to end.

  • Loss of qualifying health coverage
  • Marriage
  • Birth, adoption, or placement for foster care
  • A qualifying permanent move
  • Certain changes involving Marketplace eligibility or Medicaid/CHIP

What does not automatically create a Special Enrollment Period

Choosing to stop paying for coverage or voluntarily dropping a plan does not necessarily qualify. A move may require proof of prior qualifying coverage, and an employer offer can affect eligibility. The official Marketplace decides whether the event qualifies.

Prepare before the deadline

Gather the event notice, prior coverage information, household details, and income estimate. Compare the effective date and provider network before selecting a plan, then follow any premium payment instructions from the insurer.

Common questions

Can I buy Marketplace insurance at any time?

Generally, enrollment is during Open Enrollment unless you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.

Does losing Medicaid let me shop for a Marketplace plan?

Loss of Medicaid or CHIP may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period. Confirm the current rules and timing through HealthCare.gov.
